'Mind hackers' could get secrets from your brainwaves

Could hackers get access to your bank details and PIN codes by reading your mind? It wouldn't be easy, but computer scientists reckon its theoretically possible using wireless EEG headsets like Emotiv's Epoc, which costs only $299. These are not yet mass-market devices, but people who use headsets to play games and control devices such as wheelchairs could conceivably have their brains hacked if they download rogue applications. Ivan Martinovic, from the University of Oxford, explored the idea in his talk at the Usenix Security Symposium held in Seattle earlier this month (video). The team behind the research -- which also included members from the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Geneva -- has published at paper: On the Feasibility of Side-Channel Attacks with Brain-Computer Interface (PDF). Emotiv EPOC headset in use One aim of the research was to explore whether or not EEG headsets represented a threat to privacy. While there are many such headsets available, they used the Emotiv device because of its low cost and because the company makes its API available to researchers, and it has a software development kit (SDK) for developers. Outside of medicine, where researchers have been studying electro-encephalograms for decades, EEG headsets are most often used for games and for control applications or both. For example, someone can use their brainwaves to shoot virtual fireballs in the Arena game, or to control a real toy helicopter. Usually, the control process involves mastering one command at a time, and facial expressions can be used, such as winks and smiles.

Beyond that, the brain responds naturally to external stimuli. One of the most useful is the P300 recognition response that peaks about 300 milliseconds after the user recognises something relevant. The team developed a recognition model by, for example, showing test subjects photographs of people they didn't know, and then showing them a face they did know: Barack Obama.

After that, you can try to detect unknown data. For example, if you had test subjects and photographs of their homes, you could find out who lived where by showing them the pictures and looking for the recognition response. The team did find homes correctly about 60 percent of the time.

By showing people images related to credit cards, PINs and so on, a hacker might also be able to discover private banking details. The researchers don't claim to have done this, but Martinovic told the symposium that "we could actually perform better than a pure random guess". They are now looking at "more sophisticated attacks".

The system could also be used for market research, or for interrogation purposes. For example, you could test a suspect with photographs of crime scenes, or rape victims.

Martinovic said: "we're interested in subconscious responses. Even if you try to lie, you will actually need more attention, and this will produce a better signal for us to detect."

Brainwaves are messy things to track, and a lot of pre-processing is required to extract a signal from the noise. Also, EEG headsets such as Emotiv's are not optimised to capture P300 signals. However, one day, brain hackers might be able to get useful signals without a subject's co-operation, perhaps by a combination of face- and brain-scanning. That really would be a threat to privacy.

Cell phones, and the Costs applied

There are somethings we all wonder.... this is one of my personal questions on a monthly basis. Is it worth having a contract phone versus a pay as you go phone?
I guess it would depend on what you would want out of your phone. Iphones (Which I currently have) are only available via a contract with a specific company (I use sprint). How ever the Android phones are now available vie no contract/pay as you go. One of my favorite places to drool over the option is strait talk. If you haven't seen it yet, you can find the site here. It has the sim card for transfer into jail-broken phones, so you can get more bang for your buck if you wanted to go that direction. $45.00 dollars a month is pretty amazing, seeing as I'm paying $80 a month to do essentially do the same thing but with more options for me to get over charged by sprint on my roaming, which it seems in Durham and Raleigh the towers are never working. Seems that companies are going the unethical route just to make money, or as we all know it the bottom line. This leads into so many more questions with all these companies charging so much, why are we buying into being ripped off by them? Is my Iphone really worth being stuck with a terrible company for two years? I have a discount for working for one of the larger companies in technology (they wont be name but it's only three letters.... take a lucky guess.) I'm sure this will lead into some ethical political debate at some point so I'll stop before I get carried away.

So upon some recent realization of the insane work schedule I've been dealing with recently I will be adding some collaborative effort soon.

Android Market Place: Light Years of Change in less than One Year

As we all know there has been a large battle of the large named table sellers, and at one point was drawing lines in the sand causing feuds among family and friends. In under a year Android has quickly taken that line and thrown it in the dust. The exponential growth in the past year in the market place is all thanks to the creativity around the world coupled with the release of frame works for the easy drag and drop option for people to make the applications that the people want, something even our countries haven't managed yet. Now instead of angry teens making viruses and hacking accounts to make money they have the availability to put that angst to use and make money on something that they would want and what they know what there friends want to play with as well. On average most of the applications made and put in the market place are free with the minor ads that you can easily ignore, where as these same applications in the Apple's Itunes store is almost always a pay for application. In short that instant gratification that we all crave has been easily accomplished, leaving us with that want for more and others willing to give it to us. The best part of these phones and tablets released by Android and partner companies is the quick and easy almost desktop like use and the “nothing here is banned” attitude that Apple is currently lacking. This has not only opened the option for the next generation to start working earlier but has also open up to a new generation of programming that is sure to evolve to amaze us in the coming years. Android has made its beginning mark in our history books but the question still remains as to how far will it take us.

Tool bars

Tool bars ,its striked out for a reason.
They're a pain in the ass and they cause more problems then they solve.... and seeing as they solve no issues..... screw 'em!
The thing is they come with almost all freeware downloads and some other downloads so you have to make sure you're un-checking the boxes that say "add blah tool bar to your internet browser" and "Change blah to your home page" other wise you end up with crap that just clutters up you space/ causes easy entrance for virus infections.
Since I'm mentioning this now My Web Search and Webfetti are my two biggest No-no's, at my work we've classified them as technical Malware infections because even if you do choose to uninstall, it takes some serious work to physically pick it out of your system. (and yes that is a pain in any tech's ass)
So just remember...... * Say No to Toolbars*.
